Defining Success
The first step in becoming successful is understanding the how and why we define success.
Success and achievement are not synonymous…
Far too often success is classified as an end state.
As a finality, something conquered, attained and or owned.
This is primarily because ones goals set them on a path with a singular focus on achievement and if reached we mistakenly define as being successful..
Success, simply defined is paying your daily dues to better yesterday’s version..
If you make a million dollars in 2015 are you successful? Could you stop doing whatever it is you do and still be regarded as a success?
Does a parent send their child off to first grade and when their first report card comes home with glowing remarks, would we say that person has achieved success as a parent?
Of course not. Success is the process, it is ongoing, it is not a trophy earned to display on a mantle.
I learned a valuable less long ago from a wise and most cherished mentor…..
“When you find achievement in one area of your life, acknowledge it, be grateful and simultaneously dismiss it in the same breath.
Immediately redirect your attention to future endeavors in order to keep momentum driving in the desired direction…
As the sunsets on the day so too does it set on the accomplishments of that day.
Living in the past, relishing in previous victories breeds complacency, contempt, a false sense of pride and sets you up for failures of tomorrow…
You won’t find a trophy, an award, a cover, or anything celebrating previous achievements anywhere in my homes or office.
I have zero desire to be reminded of mountains already conquered.
This is what memories are for..
Pay your dues and earn your success, everyday…
If you can do that, you will no longer hope and pray for future victories, but rather measure to the degree of which you succeed 💪
